Tips on your Child’s First Dental Visit

Kingston TN

There are so many firsts for a new parent: first steps, first words, the first day of school … and their first dental visit. Current guidance from the American Dental Association recommends your child begins seeing the dentist once every six months once their first primary tooth erupts from the gum line or they reach their first birthday–whichever of those milestones happens first. LakeView Dental Arts wants to prepare you for that first dental visit with these four tips.

Tip 1: Timing the appointment

Try to schedule the appointment at a time of day when your child is the least fussy. This makes it more likely that the appointment is a pleasant experience for your child.

Tip 2: Prepare the paperwork

Call your dentist in Kingston and see if you can complete some of the intake and health history forms in advance. This limits the amount of time you will need to spend in the waiting room. If you have dental insurance, make sure that you share your policy information with LakeView Dental Arts at least three days before your scheduled appointment.

Tip 3: Prepare your child

Make sure to discuss the upcoming appointment with your child and talk about what they can expect. You could even read your child a book or watch a show to help them visualize the dentist and a dental visit.

Tip 4: Make the appointment fun

You want your child to be as comfortable as possible for this introduction to the dentist. If your child is nervous or you sense anxiety, bring along an older sibling or a stuffed animal “friend” who can go first as the dentist or their technician demonstrates each aspect of the dental visit. You could also bring along a small treat for your child as a reward for good behavior once the appointment is complete.

What to expect during your child’s first dental appointment in Kingston

Your child will sit directly in the dental chair or, if they’re especially squirmy, in your lap. One of our dentists, Dr. James Walmsley or Dr. Josh Walker, will examine their jaw, teeth and gums to ensure they are developing properly, while also looking for areas of tooth decay or any other problems. This initial appointment is also a great time for you as the parent to ask any questions you might have about your child’s oral care, and it can help to prepare these questions in advance.
