At LakeView Dental Arts, we offer in-office whitening treatment that can greatly improve the brightness of your smile. Tooth whitening will lighten your smile by removing stains and discolorations. Most in-office whitening procedures need to be repeated from time to time if you want to maintain your bright, beautiful smile!
Why Whiten Your Teeth
The color of your natural teeth is created by the scattering of light off the outer layer of your enamel. Below the enamel is dentin, another major component of your teeth that is yellow in color. Thinner enamel allows more of the dentin to show through, which can cause your teeth to appear yellow.
Your enamel is also porous and can hold stains. Yellow or stained teeth are typically the result of tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, or the consumption of coffee, cola, tea, or red wine. Also, your enamel will naturally thin as you age, and the dentin becomes darker. While the inside of your teeth can pick up stains as well, tooth whitening is most effective on surface stains.
Preparation for Teeth Whitening
The preparation for teeth whitening is quite simple. Before you can undergo a whitening treatment, you should have a professional dental cleaning. All tartar, debris, and minor stains should be removed first. Once this is done, the whitening procedure can begin. We may take pictures of your teeth to help us monitor the progress of your treatment.
Tooth Whitening Procedure
During the procedure, Dr. Walmsley will apply a whitening gel directly to the tooth surface. In-office whitening allows us to use a more powerful whitening gel because we are licensed professionals. We also use a special LED whitening lamp to accelerate the results. This means you can get up to eight shades whiter in just 45 minutes! If your teeth are severely discolored, we may also recommend you continue the bleaching process at home.
While you can buy whitening products over the counter, they tend to be less effective. These products contain weaker whitening agents than our products and may take longer to achieve results. Strips and over-the-counter trays are simply less effective than the products you can receive from us.
If you would like to continue with at-home whitening, we can custom-build you a tray in our dental laboratory, using impressions of your teeth. These trays will fit your teeth perfectly, allowing for the proper exposure of the bleaching agent, not to mention a more comfortable fit. Many of our patients achieve the amount of whitening they want within a week or two when they use our products.
If you are experiencing any soreness after your treatment, you should schedule a follow-up appointment with us as soon as possible. Since whitening is not a permanent solution, the stains will come back. Be sure to limit your consumption of foods and drinks that are known to cause stains. If you opt to receive a custom-made mouthpiece and whitening agent, you can treat your teeth at home. Talk with Dr. Walmsley about what which whitening products are best for you!
