Sleep Apnea & Snoring
Kingston, TN

Husband snoring in bed with wife before sleep apnea treatment at LakeView Dental Arts
Snoring is often the brunt of any jokes, however, in reality, snoring can be an indication of a serious problem known as sleep apnea. With sleep apnea, not only do you snore, but you also wake up day after day feeling exhausted. Sleep apnea and snoring have a serious effect on your quality of sleep, as well as mental, physical, and emotional health. If you suffer from sleep apnea and snoring, LakeView Dental Arts may be able to help.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep is a restorative time that allows your body and your mind to rest and repair. As you sleep, you go through two different cycles, which repeat multiple times. Going through these cycles is essential for ensuring that you wake up feeling rested and refreshed. Sleep apnea is a condition that affects your sleep patterns. When you have sleep apnea, your breathing stops for several seconds, called an apneic event, several times during the course of the night. In some cases, your breathing may stop for as long as 90 seconds. The severity ranges from mild, where you have 5 to 14 apneic events per sleeping hour, to severe, where you have over 30 apneic events per hour.

There are two types of sleep apnea. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. This type of sleep apnea is caused by a blockage of your airway. The blocking of your airway and mild to moderate cases can be helped with dental appliances that can be fabricated at LakeView Dental Arts .

Other Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea, although you might not be aware that you snore unless someone informs you of it. Waking up with a sore or dry throat can often point toward snoring as well. Other symptoms of sleep apnea include:
•  Waking up exhausted.
•  Having trouble focusing.
•  Difficulty staying awake throughout the daytime. You may even doze off, even while performing tasks that require concentration.
•  Irritability.

Treating Sleep Apnea With Oral Appliances

Diagnosing sleep apnea requires a sleep study, which can be performed at a sleep clinic or in your own home. During the study, you are hooked up to machines while you sleep. These machines read the electrical signals in your brain and your body and record the information. A sleep specialist then reads the information and makes the diagnosis of sleep apnea or another sleep-related disorder.

We can help to treat your sleep apnea and stop your snoring with an oral appliance. Commonly called a night guard, these guards are made from impressions of your mouth, which ensures a comfortable fit. The guard works to hold your jaw in proper alignment, preventing it from sliding back keeping your airways from being blocked.

Other Treatments for Sleep Apnea

There are several other treatments that may be used to help alleviate your sleep apnea. These treatments include:
•  Weight loss.
•  C-PAP. This machine delivers a constant stream of air through a mask worn over the nose to keep your airways open (for severe cases).
•  Oral surgery. In more drastic cases, oral surgery may be required. There are different types of surgery that may be performed, such as those that remove excess oral tissue or those that realign the jaw.
