Kingston TN
Walk into the dental section of any retail store, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the choices of toothbrushes, flosses and fancy gadgets that promise to deliver brighter, whiter, healthier results than the products beside them. How do you possibly choose? Our family dentist in Kingston is sharing some good news on today’s blog that may surprise you. There’s a reason that dentist’s offices often send patients home after every routine checkup with a little baggie holding a regular, classic toothbrush and floss: It’s because those two simple, humble tools are still the only ones you need to wear a happy, healthy smile.
The tried-and-true toothbrush
The human mouth is full of bacteria — some of it is healthy and some of it is harmful. When we eat, particles of food can become lodged in and between our teeth. Acid-producing bacteria feed and thrive off what’s left in the mouth, eventually leading to a sticky buildup of plaque on the teeth. Plaque eventually turns to tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. If ignored, tartar leads to tooth decay (cavities), bad breath and gum disease.
The toothbrush is your first line of defense against this because it removes food particles and plaque from the surfaces of teeth.
Our Harriman family dentist recommends brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush in gentle, circular motions twice a day — once after breakfast and once before bed — for two minutes each time. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months or earlier if the bristles start to fray.
Why is flossing necessary?
While brushing removes food, bacteria and plaque from the surfaces of teeth, other areas between the teeth are harder for bristles to reach. That’s why in our Rockwood family dentist’s office, we recommend flossing at least once a day, preferably at night before bedtime. Flossing removes food particles and bacteria that a toothbrush may have missed and also protects against gum disease by sweeping bacteria away from the gum line.
Aren’t there better tools than a plain toothbrush and floss?
We certainly would never discourage our patients from using tools like an electric toothbrush or water flosser to enhance their oral health regimen. But fancy gadgets aren’t needed to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
