Questions about Crowns

Kingston, TN

A dental crown replaces the entire exterior of your tooth, and dentists recommend this procedure when a tooth is badly damaged or decayed. Once installed by your Kingston aesthetic dentist at LakeView Dental Arts, a crown prevents further damage to your tooth and provides years of aesthetics and function.

What is a crown?

A crown is a dental restoration that provides a new exterior for your tooth, also protecting the interior structure of the tooth: the tooth root, nerves, and blood supply.

LakeView Dental Arts offers various types of crowns, depending on your oral health needs

  • All-porcelain or Zirconium crowns
  • E-max crowns
  • Gold crowns
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
  • Prefabricated stainless steels crowns, most often used on children’s primary teeth

Why should I get a crown?

LakeView Dental Arts strives to avoid tooth loss when possible. Pulling a damaged tooth may seem like an easier and cheaper option, but repairing the tooth with a dental crown benefits your long-term oral health.

What can I expect when getting a crown?

Your treatment may require one to two visits to our Kingston dental office, depending on the material used to fabricate your crown.

The first step in the process entails removing any damaged or decayed tooth structure.

For adult patients receiving crowns, the next step involves taking impressions or digital scans of your tooth that are used to make your crown. Depending on the material used for your crown, we may fabricate it in our office using sophisticated technology or send the images and impressions to a dental lab that crafts your crown within a couple of weeks.

If you are getting a crown created at an off-site dental lab, then you return to our office about two weeks after your initial appointment to receive your permanent crown.

Will my crown come loose or pop off in a few years?

Crowns are permanently bonded to your tooth, meaning they should last for years with proper care and maintenance. As long as you brush and floss daily and see the dentist for cleanings and checkups, we can monitor your crown, as well as the health of your other teeth, for any changes that could compromise its integrity or fit. However, crowns typically last a decade or longer.

What will my crown look like?

Crowns are crafted to look just like a real tooth unless gold or stainless steel crowns are chosen. However, crowns made of porcelain are matched to your existing teeth and will have similar markings as a tooth so that the results look natural.

Why do kids get dental crowns?

Kids often require stainless steel crowns to treat their primary or baby teeth that have sustained extensive decay. While some parents may request that we pull the decayed tooth, we advise against that option. Preserving your child’s baby teeth helps ensure that their permanent teeth erupt on time, helps them chew healthy foods and receive proper nutrition, and instills confidence. Stainless steel crowns cost much less than adult crowns since your child will eventually lose their baby teeth.
